I Tried Aerial Yoga and This is How it Went

So I got a lot of questions about aerial yoga when I posted this picture on my Instagram story. It actually wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I definitely felt a little challenged because most of my strength comes from my lower body, and some of the poses in this class required pulling myself up in the air. I had to learn how to trust myself in order to let go and get myself off the ground. The class I took was at the Breathing Room Yoga Center in New Haven, CT. The only requirements for taking the class were to take off all your jewelry and to wear a long sleeve shirt to prevent chafing. I wore a bodysuit to prevent my shirt from going up when I hung upside down.

When I got there I was told to put my shoes, jacket, and purse in a cubby. I really liked the atmosphere of the class. It was very calm and zen, and the people that I took the class with were very friendly and supportive. The girls in the class cheered me on and helped back spot me when needed.

Each yoga hammock was altered for each person’s height and holds up to 2,000 lbs. Aerial Yoga improves flexibility, strength, and reduces back pains. It’s also one of the best ab workouts. This class probably isn’t the best fit for you if you have motion sickness because you hang around in the air for a majority of the time and you’re upside down. I sometimes get motion sickness but I was eager to try out this class so when I started feeling dizzy or nauseous the instructor just mentioned to take a break and come back to it when I was ready. She was very patient with me. I was definitely sore the next day and my stomach felt harder AND that was only from the FIRST class.

I wouldn’t say I’m converted just yet but I thought I’d share my first experience with you. If you live in the area I would definitely recommend signing up online. The beginner class costs $17 and fills up quickly. What I really loved about this class was that anyone could do it and you don’t have to be skilled coming in. The instructor will definitely work with your comfort zone and if you’re feeling a little more riskayyyy she’ll show you more advanced moves. If you’re a student they’re having a new member special for three weeks of unlimited yoga for $30! I definitely enjoyed myself here and hope to find a yoga studio just as good in New York.

If any of you try out this place let me know how you like it!
